f/2.5 Wide Aperture - Low Light and Background Separation
At f/2.5, the XCD 2,5/38V is a genuinely fast wide-angle lens by medium format standards. In low-light environments such as indoor documentary work, street photography at dusk, or available-light photojournalism, f/2.5 provides a meaningful advantage in shutter speed and ISO headroom over slower wide-angle alternatives. Even at 30mm equivalent, the combination of medium format sensor size and f/2.5 aperture produces pleasing background separation, drawing the subject out from its environment with a natural quality unique to the medium format imaging circle.
Hallmark Eight-Point Starburst Effect
When stopped down to narrower apertures, the XCD 2,5/38V produces Hasselblad's distinctive eight-point starburst effect on bright point light sources - street lamps, window light, sun rays breaking through foliage. This optical signature, caused by the leaf shutter blade geometry, adds a cinematic quality to architectural, landscape, and urban night photography that is uniquely Hasselblad.
Advanced 10-Element Optical Design with Three Aspherical and Three ED Elements
The XCD 2,5/38V uses a sophisticated optical structure of ten elements in nine groups, incorporating three aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements - an unusually generous optical specification for a lens of this size and weight. The three aspherical elements correct spherical aberration, field curvature, and distortion across the wide field of view. The three ED elements aggressively suppress chromatic dispersion, eliminating colour fringing across the entire image. The result is a low-distortion, high-contrast image with vibrant and accurate colours from corner to corner, fully exploiting the resolving power of Hasselblad's 100-megapixel sensors.
Compact and Lightweight V Series Design
Despite housing ten optical elements and a fast f/2.5 aperture, the XCD 2,5/38V weighs just 350g and measures 63mm in length from the mount flange. Its full metal body carries the signature XCD V series design language: a V designation at the lens end, and both the focus ring and control ring engraved with the Hasselblad H logo pattern using a precise 0.3mm drill bit - a detail borrowed from the classic HC/HCD lens heritage.
Push-Pull AF/MF Switching with Engraved Distance Scale
The XCD 2,5/38V introduces a refined push-pull focus ring mechanism that makes switching between autofocus and full-time manual focus completely intuitive. Pull the focus ring towards you to engage manual focus, push it forward to return to AF - no buttons, no menus. In manual focus mode, an engraved distance scale and depth of field markings keep focus distance and DOF clear at a glance, making zone focusing for street photography straightforward.
Customisable Control Ring
In addition to the focus ring, the XCD 2,5/38V features a dedicated lens control ring that can be customised to control ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, face switching, or set to N/A. This puts a critical shooting parameter under the left hand without requiring menu navigation, keeping the shooting experience fluid and distraction-free.
Linear Stepping Motor with PDAF for Fast, Accurate Autofocus
The upgraded focusing module uses a linear stepping motor driving a compact, lightweight internal focus group. Backlash from the focusing group is eliminated by the linear motor design. Paired with the PDAF system of the X2D 100C or X2D II 100C, autofocus is fast, accurate, near-silent, and settles precisely at the correct focus position. Internal focusing keeps the lens dimensions constant at all focus distances.
30cm Minimum Focus Distance for Close-Up Versatility
With a minimum focus distance of just 30cm, the XCD 2,5/38V extends well beyond typical wide-angle expectations. Food photography, product close-ups, and environmental detail shots are all within comfortable reach, making this a remarkably versatile single lens across both sweeping scenes and intimate subjects.
Upgraded Compact Leaf Shutter with Full Flash Sync
The XCD 2,5/38V uses an optimised, more compact leaf shutter module that provides full flash synchronisation at all speeds up to 1/2000s. The shutter operates quickly and quietly, generating minimal vibration, making it well suited to handheld shooting in challenging conditions.
Compatible with All Hasselblad X System Cameras and 907X
The XCD 2,5/38V is fully compatible with the complete Hasselblad X System lineup including the X2D II 100C, X2D 100C, X1D II 50C, and the 907X + CFV digital back combination. All lenses perform to their full potential when used with the X2D 100C or X2D II 100C with PDAF. A 72mm filter thread accommodates all standard 72mm filters.
