43mm Equivalent - The Most Natural Perspective in Photography
The 43mm full-frame equivalent focal length of the XCD 2,5/55V corresponds most closely to the field of view of the human eye. Neither wide nor telephoto, it captures scenes without compression or distortion, producing images that feel immediate, authentic, and true to life. This makes it the natural choice for documentary photographers, photojournalists, and portrait photographers who want to capture the world as it actually appears - without the exaggeration of a wide lens or the flatness of a telephoto.
f/2.5 Aperture - Beautiful Bokeh and Low-Light Capability
The large f/2.5 maximum aperture gives the XCD 2,5/55V two distinct advantages. In low light, it provides exceptional exposure latitude, allowing photographers to shoot in dim indoor environments, at dusk, and in challenging available light without resorting to high ISO values. In any light, the combination of f/2.5 and the medium format imaging circle produces a soft, organic background separation with a natural and flattering bokeh quality that is distinctively Hasselblad. Full and half-length portraits benefit particularly from this combination of natural perspective and smooth background rendering.
Hallmark Eight-Point Starburst Effect
When stopped down to narrower apertures, the XCD 2,5/55V produces Hasselblad's signature eight-point starburst effect on bright point light sources. This effect, created by the geometry of the leaf shutter blades, adds a distinctive and cinematic quality to images featuring street lamps, candles, window light, and sunbursts - a visual signature that has defined Hasselblad's aesthetic for decades.
9-Element Optical Design with Large-Diameter Aspherical Element
The XCD 2,5/55V uses a nine-element optical structure in eight groups, incorporating two standard aspherical elements, one ED element, and one specially made large-diameter aspherical element. The large-diameter aspherical element is a particularly demanding optical component to manufacture, used here to achieve exceptional correction of spherical aberration across the full medium format imaging circle at the wide f/2.5 aperture. The result is consistent, high-contrast sharpness from centre to edge at every aperture, fully exploiting the resolving power of Hasselblad's 100-megapixel sensors with vibrant and true-to-life colour reproduction.
Push-Pull AF/MF Switching with Engraved Distance Scale
The XCD 2,5/55V uses the same refined push-pull focus ring mechanism introduced across the V series. Pull the focus ring towards you to engage full manual focus with an engraved distance scale and depth of field markings visible at a glance. Push it forward to return to autofocus. This eliminates the need for any button or menu interaction when switching between modes, keeping the shooting experience natural and uninterrupted.
Customisable Control Ring
A dedicated control ring sits alongside the focus ring, customisable to control ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, face switching, or set to N/A. Both the focus ring and control ring are precision-engraved with the Hasselblad H logo pattern using a 0.3mm drill bit, a design detail inherited from the classic HC/HCD lens heritage. The lens is designed to be a homage to Hasselblad's past while standing as its own elegant modern statement.
Linear Stepping Motor with PDAF for Fast, Accurate Autofocus
The upgraded focusing module uses a linear stepping motor driving a compact, lightweight internal focus group. Backlash is eliminated by the linear motor design, and coupled with the PDAF system of the X2D 100C or X2D II 100C, the result is fast, silent, and precisely settled autofocus for every frame. Internal focusing keeps the lens dimensions constant at all focus distances.
Compact and Lightweight V Series Build
At just 372g and 67mm in length from the mount flange, the XCD 2,5/55V is a remarkably compact lens for its optical specification and aperture. Its full metal body, careful balance, and fine-tuned tactile mechanics make it comfortable and intuitive to hold and operate, designed to support the creative process rather than distract from it.
Compatible with All Hasselblad X System Cameras and 907X
The XCD 2,5/55V is fully compatible with the complete Hasselblad X System lineup including the X2D II 100C, X2D 100C, X1D II 50C, and the 907X + CFV digital back combination. All V series lenses perform to their full potential when used with the X2D 100C or X2D II 100C with PDAF. A 72mm filter thread accommodates all standard 72mm filters.
